SHANGHAI, October 15, 2005 - Shui On Land Limited
(SOL), a leading property developer in China, and Oracle
China (registered as Beijing Oracle Software Co., Ltd.)
today announced that they are working in close collaboration
to support the efforts of Shanghai's Yangpu District
to transform the district into a leading knowledge and
innovation hub. This paves the way for the Yangpu District
to become a "digitized" community.
Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by
both companies, Oracle and SOL will demonstrate and
continually develop leading digital community technologies
at the Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC), SOL's
new property development in Yangpu. Examples of cutting-edge
digital community technologies include: Distance Learning,
Community Collaboration, Broadband Content Delivery,
Electronic Money Transactions and Radio Frequency Identification.
"This strategic cooperation reflects both the shared
vision and commitment of Oracle and Shui On Land to
the development and enhancement of communities in China,
and the spirit of innovation that underpins all of Shui
On Land's projects," said Vincent H.S. Lo, Chairman
and CEO of Shui On Land. "More importantly, I believe
that this alliance will help create a blueprint for
China's 'cities of the future' as the country rapidly
transforms, innovates and modernizes."
"Today's announcement of Oracle's collaboration
with Shui On Land reinforces Oracle's success in driving
local partnerships that deliver strategic value to communities
across China," said Charles Phillips, President
of Oracle Corporation. "The potential of this project
to spur innovation among a new generation of Chinese
entrepreneurs and researchers will benefit both China
as well as global economies in the future. Oracle's
commitment to meeting the needs of the local Chinese
communities have contributed to our significant growth
in China over the last 16 years."
Phillips attended today's signing ceremony in Shanghai
as part of his Golden China trip.
Building the Knowledge and Innovation Community
Located in close proximity to numerous major universities
and research institutes in the Yangpu District, the
Knowledge and Innovation Community is focused on fostering
technological innovation and entrepreneurship in China.
KIC is modelled on SOL's successful "live-work-play"
design concept. When completed, KIC will provide integrated
facilities for young entrepreneurs and IT professionals,
including research and development (R&D) centers,
offices, residential quarters and commercial outlets.
By placing strong emphasis on education, technology,
culture, research and business incubation, KIC aims
to be a well-rounded community where people live, study,
work and relax.
Yangpu, with an area of 60,61 square kilometres and
a population of more than one million people, is home
to more than one hundred research institutes and 14
universities and colleges including Fudan University,
Tongji University, Shanghai University of Finance and
Economics, Shanghai Institute of Electric Power and
Second Military Medical University. Yangpu has created
a blueprint to become a world-class academic and research
and development hub, with a highly digitized environment.
Oracle's Advance Technology Solution Center to showcase
latest technologies
The strategic partnership between Oracle and SOL will
initially focus on the establishment of Oracle's Advance
Technology Solution Center (ATSC) at KIC, with the support
of the Yangpu District Government and the Oracle China
Development Centers in Shenzhen and Beijing. Oracle's
Advance Technology Solution Center will be the first
ever R&D facility in China to focus exclusively
on developing and showcasing digital community technologies
leveraging Oracle's applications and technology platform.
These include Oracle Database 10g, Oracle Application
Server 10g and Oracle Applications.
The digital community technologies from Oracle will
be implemented over time at KIC, with the aim to create
a "digitized" community. Practical, day-to-day
benefits that the partnership is expected to bring to
KIC's tenants and management include "smart"
buildings, integrated home networks and state-of-the-art
property management and communications systems.
"As Oracle's chief engine for research and development
in China, the Oracle China Development Centers in Beijing
and Shenzhen work closely with local partners in developing
solutions on Oracle's latest technologies to address
the unique needs of customers in China," said Pascal
Sero, Vice President of Oracle China Development Centers.
"Our expertise in developing digital community
technologies and the strong local developer community
will be leveraged at the Advance Technology Solution
Center. We are confident that our close collaboration
with SOL to develop leading-edge technologies for the
Knowledge and Innovation Centre will drive some of the
most innovative research in the industry today."
