Live
performances kicked off at 10pm and lasted until 1:00am
into the New Year's first day at Taipingqiao Lake, in
Xintiandi. Coco Lee, the famous Chinese-American pop
queen, performed for the record crowds at Xintiandi.
Immediately
after the New Year's countdown, a firework show excited
the crowd.
Key
government officials as well as Mr. Vincent H.S. Lo,
Chairman of Shui On Group, representing the organizers
of the Countdown Party, welcomed the first moment of
2003. The dignitaries were joined by thousands of Shanghai
residents, tourists and revellers who helped ring in
the New Year.
In
Shanghai, Xintiandi has fast become the meeting grounds
for entrepreneurs with vision and energy, and for those
today who still dare to stretch their cultural horizons.
The commercial, fashion and entertainment hub has achieved,
in the Shui On Group's words, a place where "yesterday
meets tomorrow in Shanghai today.

About Shui On and Shanghai Xintiandi
Shanghai
Xintiandi is a popular entertainment hub in the city
centre imbued with Shanghai's historical and cultural
legacies. It is a re-creation born out of the sprawls
of Shikumen housing, which is the architectural symbol
of early 20th century Shanghai. Xintiandi
was created by converting Shikumen residential blocks
into a multifunctional business and entertainment centre
flowing with restaurants, boutiques, cafes and bars
of an international standard.
Shanghai
Xintiandi consists of two blocks, echoing its unique
"yesterday-meets-tomorrow" design concept:
the North Block is mainly composed of renovated Shikumen
buildings, representing yesterday while the South Block
contains mostly modern architecture, symbolising tomorrow.
A pedestrian walkway links up the shops and restaurants
in the two blocks.
The principal
investor of Shanghai Xintiandi is the Shui On Group,
which was founded in Hong Kong in 1971 by Mr Vincent
H.S. Lo. Through the years he has built Shui On from
a small construction company into a diversified group
engaged in property development, construction and construction
materials with interests in Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland
and North America.
